Staying Front of Mind

We're very excited by what we're seeing in the marketplace right now. Companies are starting to hire and the economy is waking back up after a very uncertain economic period. Companies are still being very cautious, however, with their hiring. I get calls all the time from candidates who see jobs listed on Springborn's website, and they say, "I'm trainable! I can do that job!" While we sympathize, and we're anxious to fill our job orders for our clients with fantastic employees like you, we are still hampered a bit by what our clients are looking for from us.

Imagine you're working at a wonderful company here in Maine, and your company has weathered the recession. The company went through some layoffs, everyone's taken on additional responsibilities and you're all doing more with less. You decide to go to your boss and say, "I think it's time for us to bring on some additional help." You're going to want to see resumes of candidates who have the exact skills and experience you're looking for. You are not likely to bring resumes to your boss of someone fantastic, but without the skill set you're looking for, in the hopes that that person will be able to pick things up quickly. Companies don't have the manpower or time to train right now. They are hoping for someone to step in and do the job quickly and without too much lag time. If your resume is well-written and indicative of your excellent work history, yet doesn't match what they're looking for, it means your resume likely will be discarded in favor of other candidates who are a match for the company's current needs.

So how can you find a job with a wonderful company like the one I described above? There are some steps you can take to try to stay front of mind.

Adjusting your resume and cover letter to fit the job at hand. I have spoken with many people who have a hard time selling themselves on their resume and cover letter, but if you don't, who will? Make sure you highlight the job skills you possess and the positions you've held that are a match for the job description. Keep your cover letter brief but pointed. Keep your resume factual and easy to read. Companies receive hundreds of resumes for each job they post, and we're no exception. Don't make it hard for the hiring manager to see where you are a match.

Registering with a Staffing Agency like Springborn. We are another set of eyes and another advocate for you if your work history and skills match what our client is looking for. We are always trying to get our clients to take a look at a smart, capable, trainable candidates such as yourself. We work very hard to have close relationships with the hiring decision makers in Maine, so that when we have someone like you on our candidate roster, we can say, "I know this person doesn't have the exact background you're looking for, but you trust me right? I know this person deserves a chance, and would be an excellent choice."

Keep us informed of skill sets you possess. Springborn employs state-of-the-art staffing software that allows you to log in and update your skills, occupations, and availability. If we're working fast and need someone who has experience with a little-used piece of software, we will do a search and see that you've got that experience, you're our first phone call.

Have some patience for your friendly neighborhood staffing manager! We only work with the best, that's why we have you on our hotlist. Know that we are trying our best to fill our job orders with the right candidate. We want you to be in a job you love, that is the best fit for you and for the company we're working with. Keep us up to date on your availability, let us know if you see a job that's of interest, and trust us to place you with the right company at the right time.
